Hi,

Is there a tool or instructions on how to move or copy a users profile from one win2000pro computer to newer one that will have win2000pro on it?

I'd prefer a tool as this needs to be done on more then a few computers... I tried doing a ntbackup with the default settings and restoring to the new computer but when I logged on as a user it created a new profile.

Thanks for any advice.

do you have connectivity and access permissions between the workstations? If so, you can just do a profile copy from the User Profiles tab via Right Click on My Computer.

unfortunately the administrator account does not have access to the profiles and cannot copy the profiles out from Documents and Settings, and Users can't use the "copy to" command from the User Profile Tab. As a testuser I tried to copy the testuser Profile out of Documents and settings and onto a mapped drive, but a couple files are in use(like NTuser.dat)

You cannot be logged on to the account you are trying to copy from or copy to. In order to copy the profile you must log on as a different user.

makes sense, but both the user and system accounts have full control to the profile, so unless theres a way to maybe get the system account to do it... any ideas on how I could run a program as the system account?
and what that program is? or what a batch file should have in it?
also once copied over to the new computer will the users retain there SID's and have access?

all the servers are NT4 still and won't be upgraded for a while yet, so I can't use activedirectory to simply move them,

how were profiles moved in NT4 when new hardware was brought in but the OS was to remain the same? could a similar method be applied to 2000?
