Yes: Don't! 5.x is not supported on Windows 2000 (with any service packs). If you have any issues, you are dead in the water since 5.0.x is a catagory 5 product.
If you are not using 5.0.5, you are lucky if it has much stability anyway.
Best bet would be to upgrade to 7.5.1 (or wait a while and get 8.0 which will start beta next month).

Thanks for the compatibility information...
how smooth of a transition is it from 5.0 to 7.5.1? can a person with ZERO training walk through this upgrade or will it require hiring a contractor to do the job?
if a contractor is required any idea of how much time this upgrade would require? we basically use mercator to retranslate/format 4 JDE files into a new format that we send back to JDE and JDE sends to SAP.

This might mean you got Mercator from JDE, since they use it with their product and resell.
Zero training would never make it. There have been many changes between 5.x and 7.5.1, many customers used bugs in 5.x that were fixed in later versions and cause their maps to fail or produce different results. Depending on where you are located, you will have a choice of contractors. I have seen some really screw things up (but I can't mention names). One of the safest bets is Ascential Professional Services. Start with a review by a Solutions Architect to see if the system needs to be redesigned, the you can get an estimate of the work needed to convert. Remember, all the SAP type trees are imported, so they will need to be re-imported and re-mapped.
You will also need to contact JDE to make sure your systems will be compatible with the JDE version you are using.
