I recently had an 2003 sbs server crash. I recovered the MDBDATA directory and built the new server. Can anyone tell me how to get this info into the new server. Of cource, the new server is a different name as well as the domain name is different.

Thanks for any help

I believe you will be unsuccessful with this because if you rebuilt SBS you also rebuilt AD which would mean that your user accounts all have new SIDs as well.

Hopefully you configured your users in Outlook to use cached mode. If so, you should be able to locate the local OST files and use them via Outlook to recover the old mail. If you are NOT using outlook cached mode, start using it now. That has saved many of my customers.

Ideally since you now have a nice new domain, you should create an ASR with NTBackup so you can fully restore the server from the ASR floppy/tape combination. And then all you would need to do is restore your data and Exchange info from the last good backup.

I hope you find this post helpful.

Mark - what about the 2003 RSG? He could then exmerge stuff out and then back in. Basically what you do after a dial tone restore.

Zelandakh,
I think that is good thinking but don't think it will work. According to the following MSKB:
you can mount a second copy of an Exchange mailbox store (database) on the same computer as the original mailbox store, or on any other Exchange computer that is in the[red] same administrative group[/red]

Since AD was reloaded, he has a new administrative group, so I do not believe this would work.

I think the main limiting factor here is that this is an SBS implementation, AD and Exchange were both wiped out at the same time. If the server had perhaps been restored to its previous state using a backup rather than a rebuild, then there would be no issue. ISINTEG could have been run on the infostore and all would be OK. But that sadly is not the case here.

I hope you find this post helpful.

Mark

Then the only resolution (though I thought RSG would work) is Aelita Recovery Manager which I know works as I've done it. More than once... :)

that sounds like a good solution.

And I would suggest IMMEDIATELY creating an ASR backup.

I hope you find this post helpful.

Mark
