I’m not sure if this is the right forum for this problem, but here goes anyway.

I have an old (1997) PC that recently died and I have resurrected by installing a “new” mobo (Aopen AP5T). The old mobo was a Jetway old style with big socket for the keyboard and serial mouse.

The new one has the same keyboard socket and it works fine, but the mouse plugged into either comm1 or comm2 does not get detected. I have forced Win98 to install the driver for the mouse, and changed the mouse to be safe, but still it’s not detected.

The mobo supports a PS2 mouse by reserving/assigning an IRQ; I have disabled this function via its jumper setting, and still no joy.

Has anyone got any ideas on how I can persuade either Windoze to recognise the mouse or the mobo to tell windoze that one exists?

Please note that this question also appears on the hw forum,

Kind regards

Do you actually have the serial ports installed?

Right click My Computer, go into properties and then into device list. Make sure you don't have any Unknow Devices and that at least on of the communications ports (comm1 or comm2)are in there.

Right click My Computer

What with? A bit like "No keyboard or keyboard error, press F1 to continue"

On a serious note, yes they are installed and I have tried removing them and reinstalling.

Kind regards

If there are plugin cards for network, sound, and/or modem, you could try removing them to see if they are confliciting with the mouse's serial port in some way.

Problem solved by rockerfellerz.

He suggested that it might be a cable problem since Aopen use their own design. I found an Aopen one and tried it and it works well.

Thanks for all of your suggestion, much appreciated.

Crusty - nice to hear from you again! Just a quick visit....

Hi Wolluf

My visits are now a rarity. I'm afraid my health took a turn for the worse in June 2003(right ear packed in and I've lost my balance) so I don't even do much messing around with PCs anymore.

Nice to see you're still here.

Kind regards
