the mouse stopped working on my sons PC, I purchased a new mouse but this has not fixed the problem.

any help welcome

If it's a USB mouse, then try a different USB port.
If that does not work, then make sure that USB is enabled in BIOS, and there are no USB problems in Device Manager.
If no luck and the system has a PS/2 port, then try a PS/2 mouse.

If it's a PS/2 mouse, then make sure there are no problems in Device Manager.
If that's ok, then there may be a problem with the PS/2 port.
If you have an open USB port, then try a USB mouse.
If there are no USB ports available, then install a PCI USB card.

In the BIOS it's not enough just to enable usb .
You have som option line "enable legacy support for usb"
"usb legacy" "legacy for usb devices"
Enable this also .

If either the "enable legacy support for usb",
"usb legacy", or "legacy for usb devices" item is present in BIOS, then, yes, do enable it per soaplover's suggestion.
But note that these items are not present in all BIOS's, or they are enabled by default if the 'USB Controller' item is enabled.

However, if the "USB legacy" item is present and it is disabled, then jillseurre's USB mouse will lose its ability to function only in DOS and Safe mode, and it will continue to work ok in Windows if all else is working normally.

the full story:-
its an old pc with a serial mouse (ps2 logitec through an adapter). so i tried a new ps2 mouse and it didnt work...
i tried the new mouse and adapter on a different pc - did not work.
tried just the ps2 mouse and it was ok...
so suspected the adapter,
bought a new serial mouse - tested on laptop all worked ok - so tried in old pc still not working

windows ME, device manager, serial mouse ! not working
removed device
add/new hardware - auto detect - did not detect
manual set standard serial mouse loaded, rebooted, still not detecting mouse.
suspected serial port
so using bios - auto set to (cant remember exactly but 1 port at 2F and the other at 3F)
still not detecting mouse

motherboard is p51430tx titanium 1b+

any ideas

Nice detective work, Jill.

If COM 1(serial port 1) is assigned 3F8/IRQ 4 and COM 2(serial port 2) is assigned 2F8/IRQ 3 in BIOS, neither serial port has an IRQ conflict or any other problem in Device Manager, and both ports have drivers loaded as shown in the their 'Driver' tab, then it's possible that the serial ports are bad.

Assuming that the computer does not have a PS/2 port(why would you be using a PS/2 mouse with a PS/2-to-serial adapter if it did, right?) and the computer has PCI slots, then you can install a PCI USB card and a USB mouse.

the pc came with the ps2 mouse and adapter,
i assigned them the otherway round port1 2f8/irq3 and port 2 3f8/irg4
is there any problems with installing a usb module in this old PC
windows ME running

Windows 98se and Windows millennium supports USB ,and as ski says you could install a USB host adaper on a PCI slot . Cheapest and most lightly to work in your OS is to get an USB 1.1 card (not sure about USB 2.0 on 98SE and ME ).
Maybe ski knows .....?

Try assigning the serial ports in BIOS as follows:
serial port 1 with 3F8/IRQ 4
serial port 2 with 2F8/IRQ 3

If no luck with that, there is no PS/2 mouse port, and everything is ok in Dev. Mgr., then you can go the PCI USB card route.
As soaplover suggested, look for a USB 1.1 card. Even though a USB 2.0 card is backwards compatible to your system's USB 1.1 architecture, a 1.1 card will be less expensive.

ok - ta , i changed the assignments n diff
i'll look into usb route

thanks for all the help

ok, thanks for all the support, i'm now going the usb route, i have bought a usb mouse and ordered a usb pci card which i expect on friday...

i have winME, so i expect to plug it, the pc to detect new hardware, winme to install the drivers , cant find the cd yet, so hope it does not need cd,

once usb's working, then plug in the usb mouse and again it detect the mouse (i have checked the mouse is ok on my laptop).

so what else might i need in preparation???

That should do it.
Your O/S should have the necessary drivers.
Just make sure to ground yourself before doing any work inside the computer, and pull the power plug from the computer after you're grounded.

fitted usb card & mouse all working again, thanks for all you help & support
