Mouse settings aren't permanent

I have just acquired a new laptop that runs XP Pro and has a built-in trackpad. Most of the time I will be using a USB wheel mouse, however.

The system is set up to scroll by only one line at a time when rolling the mouse wheel, which isn't enough for me as it makes it tedious to scroll long documents. I can change this by going into the Mouse control panel item, selecting the Wheel tab and changing the value. I have also tried installing the TweakUI XP Powertoy and changed the setting through there but the same thing happens.

However, when I re-boot the setting goes back to the old value. Any idea why this is happening or how I can get around it?

Sometimes, making settings and exiting by "file - save - exit" works when the "red X" exit won't.

Talk to Tech Suport for the laptop maker. Some allow an external "mouse", some require a BIOS twiddle before allowing an external device, and some do not allow the additon of a new mouse device whatsever.

Well unfortunately by "new laptop" I mean "newly-acquired second-hand laptop just over 2 years old", so I don't think that Acer's tech support will even talk to me. I'll give them a go via email though, they may be feeling generous. I've already visited their site and installed the latest updates.

Micker - unfortunately being a Control Panel applet there's no menu, just 'apply' and 'OK' buttons. I was wondering whether there was a registry setting that I could modify directly, but I guess that's what the Control Panel does anyway. Something else must be overwriting my setting when Windows starts. Is it possible for me to modify the setting, export the appropriate part of the registry and put that .reg file in Startup?

It's only a minor niggle so I guess I can live with it if there's no solution.

Regards
