Computer is a laptop running Windows XP Pro hooked up to a docking station (has external mouse, keyboard and monitor). For some reason the mouse will move indipendent of any input from the user - it moved to the upper right corner. If the user tried to move the mouse the cursor still moves, and the more you try to move the mouse manually the quicker the cursor travles to the upper right corner of the screen.

I tired a new mouse (this time USB & Optical vs the original standard ball & PS/2 one) and got the same result. I then tried to delete the mouse drivers from the Device Manager and let windows reinstall them. Well that just made the curson travel to the lower left corner rather than the upper right corner.

If the mouse is moving, and you unplug the mouse and plug it back in the motion will stop but only for a bit, it will eventually start to move on its own again.

Virus scan turned up nothing, same deal with spy bot search and distroy scan.

Does the PC have a PS/2 or USB port on it? Try hooking the mouse directly to the PC and see if there's any difference.

Make sure you have the correct drivers and if you have a touchpad turn it off.

This same exact problem happened with my boss's Dell laptop. It has both a touchpad and a "pointing stick" (the one that looks like an eraser head) The problem was solved when we disabled the pointing stick.

To do this, go to the Control Panel and open the Mouse applet. I'm not sitting in front of the laptop now so I can't quite remember where you need to click next. However since you were able to reinstall the mouse drivers I'm sure you can figure out the next steps. Look for the tab related to the pointing stick and then select the checkbox to disable it. A reboot may or may not be needed. Good luck!

Often, uninstalling packaged mouse drivers will cure any/all problems.

I have also seen problems with the pointer mouse on the Dell Notebooks. Usualy a blast of a can of compressed air will help. I think sometimes a piece of crud gets stuck and causes the problems.
