Hi Im new and am currently learning to repair computers and
didnt realize that there are alot of different motherboards,
What im looking for is a recomendation on a motherboard for
AMD or Pentium from 750mhz on up to 1ghz. Any recomenations?
what should I look for in a motherboard?
Also what is the chipset and how is it important?
thanks.

I'll jump in on this one. . .newtek, you have no idea how much argument your question could cause :)

I prefer motherboards by ASUS. Not to say there are not a lot of good motherboards out there by other manufacturers!

Look at
That's Tom's Hardware guide. He does a great job of rating manufacturers products and he also explains things in as much detail as you will need.

Last question. The chipset is the main feature of the motherboard. It controls all the "low level" activities of the motherboard. The biggest thing to look for right now is the processor support and memory support. Make sure the combination of parts you buy will work together. Again, Tom's Hardware is the place to go.

I agree with DM7941. Asus MB's are the most stable boards and after all I believe that is what were after. Depending on which processor you decide on, the top boards right now are the A7V for AMD and P3V4X for Intel.

For AMD I found the ABit KA7 or KA7-100 is about the best you can get for the price. The KA7-100 has 200Mgz Front Side Bus, supports up to 2GB's of RAM, has 6 PCI, 1 ISA, 1 AGP, and it supports ATA100 IDE transfer. You can pick one up form $150-$200 and you won't have to worry about upgrading for quite some time.

Abit KA7 and KA7-100 are both exactly the same, except for one minor feature ATA-100 support, also For Athlon 'Classics' that is the best board to get, for Athlon Thunderbird and Durons(socketed) the Asus Model is the best to get, As for Intel product, it really depends on which chip you want to get, and then above everything else, you have to decide which chipset+motherboard you want to get, since Intel has much much more boards and chipsets to chose form ( I prefer the old BX boards, as they have remained very stable over the years, and are very good overclockers)
