Is there such a thing, or is it exclusive to Pentium? If it does exist, can I get one online? Where from? All help is appreciated.

Hi;

This is what I was able to find:

AMD (Sunnyvale, Calif.) currently uses a 200-MHz processor bus originally designed to support the Alpha microprocessor architecture and licensed to AMD by Compaq Computer Corp. That bus design, the EV6, can scale to speeds of 400 MHz, and AMD plans to introduce a chip set in the second half of this year, called the 760, that will allow AMD's Athlon processors to utilize front-side bus speeds of 266 MHz. The 760 chip set will also support 233-MHz Double-Data-Rate DRAM technology. AMD has no current plans to introduce chip sets that support faster bus speeds, or to license a successor to the EV6 bus that will take AMD beyond those speeds.

Thanx Eguy, I appreciate your help. In your opinion, do you think the Pentiums w/ 400mhz bus are any good? I'm wanting to beef up my system (currently Athlon 550, Voodoo3, 192 Ram, FIC SD11 motherboard) to something w/ some good power. I haven't had much hands on w/ the P4's just yet & am just wondering what their record is as far as speed & dependability compared to AMD's of equal speed rating. In other words, should I get a P4 or an AMD of about 1.0+ghz? I know bus speed can significantly increase the performance, but a good bus w/ a crappy processor... Just looking for some insight. Appreciate your help.

Greetings;

Right now I am using an AMD 1.2ghz on a Abit KT7A-RAID motherboard and I am very happy with this setup. I think that the 400 mhz bus is targeted to the big CAD users and those who make Motion Pictures for Walt Disney. This is overkill for the average home user.

Keep in mind that an AMD is about 1/3 the cost of an comporable Pentium.

Most of what I do is software developement in FoxPro and this setup keeps me as happy as a clam in white sauce.

Also keep in mind that the 1ghz+ processors do generate a lot of heat and need a good case/power supply with enough cooling power. I am using an Antec Server case with 2 fans blowing in over the hard drives and 2 blowing out the back of the case. This in addition to the fan in the power supply. As I type this my CPU temperature is 134 F (57 C).

This works for me. I hope other opinions will appear in this thread.

Good luck!

Both you guys are correct.
However I want to add something...
All the processors currently availible runs on 32 bit, even the P IV irespective the bus speeds.

Before spending money at this stage wait for the 64 bit processors "Itanium from Intel" to be released together with the 64 bit OS's.

Only a sugestion.

When do those 64 bit processors come into market? If not for many months, then I'll go on & buy myself something to keep me happy. If they will be here by October or so, then I can wait & save up some money & get a hoss system running. : )
