Motherboard Cache Transfer Recognition

I have a computer that initially came with a PIII 500Mhz 512k Slot on CPU. Currently it is running at a PIII 700Mhz(max) 256k. If I were to buy a PIII 700mhz with a 1MB or 2MB cache, can I assumue that it would work? Or would it just only read to 512k max, which in turn I would lose money for buying such a cpu.
