hi i have an ASUS a7s-vm motherboard (revsion 1006vm) and read that a new bios update was available (1007). Stupidly i downloaded a mislabeled file, which i later found out was revsion 1001vm, a much earlier revision. after flashing my chip with 1001 my computer will not post. the screen will not swtich on, i get not post beeps and i cannot switch it off by the on/off/reset switches. i know im in pretty deep here and was wondering wether anybody had any idea about fixing it. if not could you recommend a reputable place selling eeprom chips or a cheap amd atlon mb with lan/video/sound integrated (like the A7s-vm).

Thanks a lot, you guys help me out so often!

Sounds like you're screwed. Updating with the wrong BIOS is the worst thing you can do (other than running over the computer with your car).

You could try it again with the correct bios. You have nothing to lose. Make another floppy on another PC. If it won't work, then you are SOL. Please come back and let us know if your
problem is fixed and what fixed it!! [thumbsup2]

i got another detail...ive got three other pcs runnin on the same board...is it possible i could boot my pc with a eeprom from another board then swap it with my screwed chip after post and update it then? (no guesses please...i dont wanna ruin another chip!)

If the boards rev# is the same it will probably start your board. But get the whole idea of Starting/Switching While Running thing right outta yer head! YIKES!

Options: It sounds like you buy a fair ammount of machinery- Would your supplier be able to provide you with a good chip out of a returned board (RMA)?

Find out cost/time of direct replacement chip from the manufacturer

find a local tech with a diag card that can start a dead board. Might be possible to flash with that.

I have had exactly the same problem as you and got a reprogrammed chip from a Guy In netherlands. Took about 7 days. Cost me 5 UK£. Worked fine. Try this site
Alternatevly you could Hot flash it is you know someone with an Identicle motherboard although this is very risky and i wont go in to it here.

P.S. The guy that did my chip also sells new ones too :)
Hope this helps you out. If your unsure....Dont do it!

Hot swop bios flash recovery is perfectly feasable.
Losen both Eprom chips Get the working system to the actual point of flashing then quickly swop good for bad chip, flash!!! bobs your uncle! or is it mike? I can't remember lol.
Risky but possible, I seen it done on an Abit IT7.
Martin Please let members know if there advice has helped any.

What about finding an engineering, electronic repair firm, college etc. with an EPROM burner.
Take one of your good EPROMs and the bad one and ask them to copy it for you.

i found out my board has boot-block which is a block on the eeprom which is nver overwritten which allows you to boot from a floppy...however asus in its infinate wisdom has written its flash program to erase the boot-block!! i thought i mite have saved myself!! damn asus

Yes that is normal.

If you have another system with a similar Bios chip you can boot that one up, remove the bios chip and place in your bad one, flash and then swap them over again. Just make sure your careful. And dont put the bios chip in the wrong way round like I did with a mate once, it turns it into charcoal.
