Hello,
I have an old (5 years old) Nec 19" crt monitor (Nec AccuSync 90) and it is shaking. Since my dad is old and can hardly see any way (it's his computer), he could never notice; therefore, I have no clue about when this started happening. Image putting a back massager on your neck and looking at the monitor. it is that shaking/vibrating that i see in the entire screen. I have used the anti-magnetic thing on my monitor, but that didn't help at all. It has all the correct drivers and the video card is new and have tried it with different video cards and always have the same problem. I am thinking the computer finally bit the dust, but if anyone can think of a cheap solution, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thank you and have a happy Thanksgiving

Don't blame the computer... mostlikely the monitor is just plain getting OLD... you can take it to a TV repairman to have him examine the Monitor...

Ben

If it works don't fix it! If it doesn't use a sledgehammer...

Take Bens advice, hit it with a sledgehammer! No seriously, try whacking it on top (a good hard slap), it worked with old tellies for donkey years.
TV repair man would likely charge more than the monitors worth, get a new (or second hand one), but only if the whacking the monitor fails lol.

Is there a fan or motor close-by (including on the other side of the wall), say within 5 feet?

also try adjusting the Monitors refresh rates and such from within the Monitors Onscreen settings (User and Preset options) - also possibly? the Vertical/Horizontal moire

Thanks for the quick responses.

I gave her a few whacks on top and on the sides, but no help. I have tried all different types of refresh rates and resolution settings, but it still is all shaky.

I have no motors of any kind next to the monitor and even tried moving the entire computer to my living room, but it still is messing up.

Since my dad is old and can't hardly see, ill just keep it until i can find a good deal. Then, ill get out the old sledge hammer (after i drop it from the roof of my house).

Like StuReeves said, it probably will cost more to get it fixed than it would just to get a new one.

Happy Thanksgiving!

jared;
you got the right idea for a replacement - i'll tell ya though - my monitor shakes like that when coming out of power management, but it stops within a few seconds....just another avenue to look down. Try uninstalling the Drivers - they may be corrupt

make sure you have updated drivers (or just the Originals) for his monitor -- then check out Add/Remove Programs in Contrl Panel for any software related to the Display drivers, then
Boot into Safe Mode and go into Device Manager and Remove the Video card under Display Adapters....and then restart...

Could Also Start > Run DXDIAG and run through the tests for a clue and possible answer ..BTW, what version of DX and What OS?? (or did you say already)

Dont waist your time.Hitting it,or changing the drivers will not fix it. The monitor is on its way out.Time to buy a new one.

jared5494,

You obviously have access to another computer. Take your Dad's monitor and test it on a second machine. If it still shakes, it is unambiguos that the monitor needs to be replaced. It simply is no longer reasonable to repair them.

If it works perfectly, that becomes a problem. As you have replaced the video board and other related drivers, esentially you need to diagnose the issue. On your Dad's machine: Start, Run, dxdiag and see if there are issues in the driver and logical setup of the machine.

Finally, appreciate too the steps taken in particular with Windows XP for the vision impaired. It might be that an accessability option (found through Control Panel) is inappropriate for the monitor.
There are terrific resources available with a web search for "windows visually impaired" or some variation of this, including enhancements to the Microsoft XP offerings.

Best wishes,
Bill Castner

just remember - the 'way' you install drivers is very important - especially Video....but it may be time for the Jackhammer

And also monitors are dirt cheap now if you're after a CRT. Even a good 19" won't break the bank

Before whacking at it, just remove the back cover cover (after letting it discharge...) and blow air in it. Dust can do strange things to monitors. Do this outside.
