I am having problems with my Optiquest Q51 monitor. Whenever I try to go to 640 by 480 mode (like in most games) the monitor wont respond, and acts like it is off when it is on. And it will make a slight quite clicking noise. When I go to display in the control panel and try to set it to 640 by 480 manually, it does the same thing, but then defaults back to 800 by 600.

Does anyone know whats wrong?

There is 2 things that could be the prblem that I can think of right now. 1. The monitor is going bad and 2. your video card is going bad.

If the monitor is over 3 years old it could possibly be the monitor. It is also possible the video card is the culprit.
The monitor recieves the data from the video card and translates it to what you see on the screen. It is hard to tell which one of the 2 is going bad. The only test I know of that will for sure give you the answer is to hook the monitor up to a computer that you know works fine and then switch resolutions, if it switches without any problems then the monitor is fine or you could do the opposite and hook another monitor up to the computer and see if it still does it. If it does then your video card is most likely having trouble interperting the data which it recieves from the motherboard and thus sends the bad data to the monitor and causes the errors you see.

I had a similar problem once. First my video card went bad so I replaced it with an oldr video card that the computer came with and the errors stopped. Then my new 17 inch monitor quit working a couple weeks later. I'm glad it was still under warranty. :) I hope this hekps with your problem.

Thank you for the advise :)

I have a new video card, a Nvidia Geforce2 Mx400, and my monitor must be 3 or 4 years old.

I hooked up another monitor to my computer, and my games worked find under the 640 by 480 settings. Do you think its my monitor going down?

Hello,
Were you ever able to use your monitor at 640x480 with this video card?

If Yes, then your monitor could be going bad.

If No, Then your monitor just isn't syncing properly. (indicated by the click; its trying to sync, but can't) This, most likely, is due to the fact that your video card is sending too high a vertical or horizontal sync signal to your monitor. Your older monitor just can't handle the frequencies. If this is the case, You may be able to do something about it.

Right Click on your desktop and go to properties. Go to settings. From there go to advanced. Under the monitor section, you can set your hertz (refresh) rate. Try Bumping it up to 70hz, or down to 60. You can also list all possible modes under the adaptor tab.

NOTE: I'm runing win2k Pro, things may be slightly different in other versions of windows. But you should still be able to set the refresh rate (somewhere).

I had the same problem with My GeForce2 MX400. I ended up getting a new monitor(nice 21"), but this should work too. If you have your monitor information, you may be able to see what ranges it can sync in.

I hope this NFO helped
