Modem troubles

Need assistance with getting an external USR 56k modem working on a notification server. This server is set to dial out to a pager when network issues are discovered.

The server is running RedHat 7.2 with kernel 2.4.7-10. The modem is hooked upto com port 2. The server was working fine until I ran into a hard drive issue which lead me to format the server and reinstall the OS. Since the reinstall I've been unable to get the modem to work.

Here's what I've done so far to try to get the modem working again.

1. create softlink from /dev/ttyS1 to /dev/modem
2. configure modem via minicom to use /dev/ttyS1
3. AT command gives OK feedback on com 2

When I attempt to test modem from minicom I get error:

CONNECTION TIMEOUT. NO CARRIER

Desperate and need HELP?????

If you are sending an AT command and getting OK you are talking to the modem. sounds like the modem is waiting for another modem to answer the call. Do you hear dial tone and dialing? Is the modem calling another modem or a pager number?

From the line the modem is plugged into I can plug into an analong phone get dial tone and dial out. The modem is idle even when I attempt to use minicom to dial out to my pager.
