Hi all. - First of all I have a cheap and nasty motorola 56k modem installed on my Win 98 SE machine.

AOL (yes another mistake), keeps disconnecting as do all my other ISP's installed and configured on my computer.

When it disconnects me, It wont log back on to the internet until I reboot.

I have the latest MODEM drivers installed, and if I can avoid it, I don't really want to buy a new MODEM as broadband should be hitting my area soon!!

The disconnections are not due to my ISP having standard cut offs (i.e. after 1 hour or 10 mins in-activity etc..) they are total random disconnections.

So disconnections I can live with (just), but the reboots are just annoying!!

Any help anyone?

Various resons. I would suggest a google search for "modem disconnects" as there is a lot of help out there. Ed Fair

Any advice I give is my best judgement based on my interpretation of the facts you supply. Help increase my knowledge by providing some feedback, good or bad, on any advice I have given.

Reasons:
1) "Bad" (f.e.: noise) telephone line or central (call a tech to check your "lines")
2) AOL Server problem...
3) Faulty MODEM (-replace-)

Have you had Zone Alarm on your machine at some time? The reason I ask is because there is a known problem with ZA not uninstalling completely and leaving behind a problem with your PC not answering your ISP's "heartbeat" check.
