Hi all, I have this small problem (yet again) I have reformated the hard drive and then reinstalled everything back on inc the motherboard software. The PC wont pick up my modem, when I install it, the modem shows up but wont work. When you go to system props and then device manager the modem is there, and underneath in other devices with a yellow QM it shows PCI communications device. I have no idea what this is. Cheers

The PC communications device is the modem itself. If you see the yellow exclaimation mark, this means that Windows can see it, but has no correct drivers installed for it. Do you have the drivers available? If so, go to 'update drivers' and follow the prompts, browsing to the appropriate location. My suggestions are what I would try myself. If incorrect, I welcome corrections to my rather limited knowledge. Andy.

Hi No I have used the correct drivers and it just wont pick it up from other devices.

What I would suggest as a first option is boot to safe mode, then go into settings, device manager etc. and remove the "device with a yellow QM".

Reboot windows.

Windows will then setect new hardware and give you another chance to reinstall it.

Hope it helps.

If it doesn't please repost to let "us" know.

Regards.

This is how you do it:

Firstly, backup your registry. Do this by going to START, PROGRAMMES, ACCESSORIES, SYSTEM TOOLS, SYSTEM INFORMATION, TOOLS, REGISTRY CHECKER.........YES. Then got to START, RUN, and type REGEDIT. Double click HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, below it you will see a subsection called Enum, double click it to expand it. Do the same to the one marked PCI, you should now see some keys marked VEN_*******, expand each one and below it you will see another key marked BUS_******. Expand that key and each one will show you a name and data in the right-hand pane. One of those is your modem and the name will be clear. Now here's the good bit, delete the key marked BUS_*******. Reboot, and Win98 will install your modem.

Let us know how you get on.

Many Thanks that seems to have done the trick, Only problem is the modem now apears to be on com5 and takes a while to dial up and then connect.

Nothing wrong with COM5, I take it that you had installed a few COMs in your battle with the modem? Mine's on COM3 and it works marvellously well.

Thank you for replying and letting us all know that the system works, it took me a couple of years to come up ith that cure, and todate it hasn't failed.
