Thanks for reading,

I am trying to get an Acer 56k ITU/2 modem to work on a pc300gl / p133 with W95

I can get the modem to be recognized, but device manager says there are no drivers loaded. Attempts to load the drivers have been fruitless. There seems to be some trick to getting these PC's to poll their serial ports properly.

I have disabled the port in the BIOS, and have set the IRQ and I/O range to both not available and available in the legacy settings in the BIOS, but still no go.

I have checked the IBM site, but all I could find was the tip to make the serial port "not" available.

On the same tact, the built in Ethernet card ( very nice for installing software ) seems to want to appear at both IRQ 11 and IRQ 15. I remember IBM always placing them at IRQ 15, but I can't Make the second copy go away.

Thanks all

Ray

I would try removing the modem. Reboot and remove any pointers to the modem. Reboot, make sure the serial port was still gone and that the IRQ and I/O are available and usable for legacy. Shutdown and reinstall the modem. On next reboot I woud expect that it would allow me to specify driver.
However, expectation and reality are oftentimes different, especially when working with MS stuff.

thanks Ed,

I think when I removed the COM ports they reappear in W95's Dmangler, but will give it another go, also found some tips at the Aopen site, regarding setting the com port first and then adding the modem ( since the PnPray doesnt work well on this modem. )

I would like to stay with W95 as a lighter load on this machine, but if the PnP doesnt work out I may have to go to W98, it seems to go smoothly on the other PC300's with this modem.

thanks, let you know how it goes.

Ray

After 2 more hours of messing with all the settings, and having just about enough of W95, I scrubbed it and went with a fresh install of W98.

Guess what?

First pass on install, all devices, including which revision of the G40 monitor, the modem, the sound card, and onboard Network card were identified.

Small mercies.

Oh well, at least it all works now.

thanks

Ray
