Modem Not functioning

Hi All

We have recently purchased a new modem because the previous one appeared to be faulty. The trouble is we are having the same difficulty with the new one which suggests it must be the PC or config problem. We require the modem to work in DOS for direct debits and wages so it's an external modem physically connected to a com port. It wasn't working in Dos so I thought I'd test it in windows.
It seem to load alright the first time but when I dialed out there was no response. I deleted the driver and used autodetect but it wouldn't see it . I then tried it on com 2 but that didn't work either. It's a sitecom 56k with a USR chipset.
Any help would be appreciated on this matter.

You might do better posting your message under the General Modem Forum... However.

Since it's not being detected, are you sure you have the correct serial cable? Should be a "straight-through" cable. Also, check in the BIOS that COM1 or COM2 which ever you want to use, is actually enabled. Do you have l.e.d.s on the front of the modem? Are any of them lit up, or just the power-on showing? If still nothing doing, it might be wise to try and check that the serial ports are actually working correctly. I'd suggest something like CHECKIT with loopback plugs.

Better check out the Phone Service First. I have seen many problems with the modem not dialing or refusing to hang up. One simple test is to go to the box on the outside of the house. (This is how our phone company hooks us up.) Usuually there is a phone jack that connects to the phone service for the house. Pull it out and plug it back in.

This seems too simple; right?

I was amazed at the improvement from this simple procedure. Just try it and see what happens.

There gets to be a buildup of dust or corrossion of metal and sometimes the line becomes faulty. This tends to break loose any corrosion and damage caused by humidity over time. This buildup can cause a faulty ground or a bad connection. You may be receiving a message like the line is busy or the modem may not detect the existence of a phone line.
I will admit that switching part of the modem can ware out that actually does the dialing and whatever else it does. If you do not like my post feel free to point out your opinion or my errors.
 
What software package are you using? And can you talk to the modem directly?
Ususal starting point is to see if you can talk to the modem directly. Once connected "AT" and see if you get a response. Then an ATDT and phone number to see if you dial. Ed Fair
