I have a 3Com 56k voice/fax (not winmodem) installed under Linux 6.1 Redhat. I previously had this modem on a 200 Mhz with Mandrake 6.0 and it worked fine on ttyS0. Now I am installing it on a PIII 550. dmesg shows:

Serial driver version 4.27 with MANY_PORTS MULTIPORT SHARE_IRQ enabled
ttyS00 at 0x03f8 (irq = 4) is a 16550A
ttyS01 at 0x02f8 (irq = 3) is a 16550A
ttyS02 at 0x03e8 (irq = 4) is a 16550A

of course there is no ttyS00 - ttyS02 under /dev/
and all attempts to query ttyS0 - ttyS2 tell me that the modem is not responding. If I query ttyS3 it tells me the modem is busy. The COM port under windows is com3.

what do I do next? Can you help?

war...

Can't you use insmod to create them? And besides, I thought it was:

/dev/ttyS0
/dev/ttyS1
/dev/ttyS2
/dev/ttyS3
not
/dev/ttyS00
/dev/ttyS01
/dev/ttyS02
/dev/ttyS0
REH
hawkdogg@crosswinds.net
<a href= by Linux
Learn Linux and Leave out the Windows :)

Not sure how to create /dev/ entries with insmod and ordinarily you would be correct however this modem is showing up as I've explained. The ttyS00 relates to ttyS0 or Com1 etc. I've found references to the same on deja however nothing has helped so far.

Thanks REH
