Modem doesn't seem to have an IRQ 1

I work for a local ISP and I am having difficulty troubleshooting a certain situation concerning modems not connecting. Usually the error is 680, no dial tone. Everything seems to be in place on the computer's dial up settings. Also, we checked the phone cord to make sure it's plugged into the modem correctly as well as making sure a dial tone is on the phone line. I'm NOT getting any type of errors saying that the port is already open and stuff like that. But when I click on "more info" under the diagnostic tab of the modem icon and the port info comes up, I notice the interupt is 0.

Then I look in the device manager and look at the modem properties. Under the resource tab of the modem properties, the I/O range is set, but NO interupt is listed. The interupt doesn't say, "zero", but insted the interupt isn't there at all. The friendly "no conflicts" message is in the box below.

Then I look under the system information utility and review all the IRQ's. No modem to be found in the list. Yet the computer seems to recognize the modem. This all seemed to happen after a reinstall of the OS (Win 98).

What's that all about? Any enlightment would be great!

In device manager do you have a conflict showing for a serial port?
If so reinstall the driver for that and when it looks for the driver point it to the modem driver. If this is the case it will install and several minutes later it will find the modem and install it and it should then work.
If not delete the modem and no reboot then add remove hardware and select the tab to find the hardware yourself and select and set up modem.

Thanks for the reply. I ran across this situation again since I posted the question. I didn't notice any conflicts on any devices, but I will pay special attention to what you suggested about the serial port.

As for uninstalling the modem....I thought of that this time and tried it. I tried the uninstall with and without a reboot. When I did it through the add new hardware icon, it put everything back just like it was. When I removed the modem and then just clicked on the modem icon in the control panel, the modem seemed to be assigned to a different com port. I got excited until I opened the modem icon and found two modems this time! Needless to say, neither worked.

Any other suggestions? Perhaps I didn't carry out your instructions very well. Perhaps you could go indepth a little more if you have the time. Thanks very much.

It has been three years since I really installed a modem in W98 but here goes. After the modem has been deleted from device manager do not reboot.Go to add remove hardware and select the option that allows you to pick the hardware.Select modem and again select have disk and browse to the drivers for the modem. If I remember right this will even allow you to pick the com port.
