Hi All

I visited a customer yesterday who was running Win95 and they informed me that they could not could not connect to the interenet.

So when I arrived I asked them to show me what the problem was and when they tried to connect to the interenet the message no dial tone was detected.

I checked all of the obvious, phone line, phone line cable and that the modem was seated correctly, all OK, I then went into devise manager Modem OK, I then ran the Modem Diagnostics in control panel (see below) and the modem was receognised and all seemed OK.

So I then tried various setting but still could not get it to work eventually I changed the modem and alll was OK.

So what is my question.

Is it normal for the Diagnostics to say all is OK when the modem is not actually working.

The diagnostic I speak of is:

Start > Control Panel > Modem > then select the diagnostic Tab and modem and then More Info.

Every other time I have used the diagnostics tab if the modem is faulty it has said so, is there a more reliable way of checking modems?

Nyg,

Are you in the UK? If so, did the telephone line have the BT 1571 answering service activated?
I have found that some modems can't cope with the slightly modified tone that this gives if there is a new message, but others can with no problems.

The modem diagnostics test everything up to the line connection. And yes, diagnostics will tell you that a blown modem is OK in some cases. Depends on what damage was done.

You can get IRQ conflicts with modems sometimes. Also the PCI slot they are in may not be the ideal location. Often if you move an I/O card over one slot it will work better.

If you do not like my post feel free to point out your opinion or my errors.

Best way is to talk to it in command mode, look at the setup, and tell it to go offhook. Should connect and you should hear it.

To all of you

Thank you for your help and comments.

I am in the UK and had not thought of 1571 service that is something I wil remember for the future, thanks jrbarnett

I did not try moving the modem to a different PCI slot as it had worked for 3 years OK on the slot it was in and no additional devices were added, thanks ceh4702.

To Edfair, thanks for the help, I must admit I have not had a faulty modem pass the dianostic test before but as you say it could depend on the fault. I Will look at using command mode, I have not used it before as I have not needed to, any advise on this will be of great help.

Thanks again to all of you, all of your comments have been a great help.
