I have an issue with accessing a PBX (CS1K) via a US Robotics modem.
The modem answers ,but no tones are exchanged. The access to the modem is via a DDI extn down a EURO ISDN pipe.
If I access the modem from an internal extn it answers and handshakes every time.
I have tried replacing the modem with a new one, same result.

this set up has worked for me evertime i've used it:
1. There are (8) dip switches on the rear of the modem. Set switches S1, S3, S7, & S8 in the down position, the rest in the up position.

2. Connect the modem to a terminal or personal computer using a 25 pin RS232 cable.

3. Set the terminal or personal computer serial port to 9,600 baud (8 data bits / no parity / 1 stop bit ).

4. Turn the power ON to the modem.

5. Using the terminal or the terminal portion of the personal computer communications package, issue the following AT command. AT&B1&W&W1

6. Turn the power OFF to the modem, and disconnect it from the terminal or personal computer.

7. Set the (8) dip switches on the rear of the modem as follows. Set switches S1, & S4 in the down
position the rest in the up position.

8. Connect the modem to the Meridian 1 system as instructed in the NTPs

Johnpoole, thanks for the feedback, but we must be talking about a different modem, as mine doesn't have any dil switches on the back.
I connected the modem to a direct exchange line on site and it worked fine.
eventually found that it was the DDI extns CLS field FAXD that was causing the issue.Once I changed that to FAXA it worked fine. What confused the issue was that the modem had been working ok with CLS FAXD.

that setup is for the us robotics that ships with a new box, i've never used faxa for a modem, i do know it speeds up fax lines.. and if that increase is due to compression, it makes sense that it would not work to a serial port.. ie the serial just sends that streaming to the screen.

it's been over 5 years since i installed a new switch so that modem setup may be obsolete.. thanks for the feedback.
