MMC.EXE not stopping after running Device Manager

I'm trying to troubleshoot a PC that I built for a friend. I need to remove a number of device drivers via Device Manager, but I can only do a few, and then then Device Manager stops responding. I find multiple instances (6+) of MMC.EXE running in the tasklist, which I terminate, but the system still has problems, since it can't be shut down, and must be manually powered off or reset.

Has anyone encountered anything like this?
