A week or so ago I downloaded a file mkwact097b1.exe and ran it to install an application called "MKW Audio Compression Toolkit." Straight away I decided that I did not want this particular application installed on my system, so I sought to remove it. Ufortunately, it did not appear in Add/Remove Programs and I could find no information on the web to tell me how to uninstall it, so I believe that in the end I just deleted the folder from Program Files. The executable was still sitting on my Desktop, however.

Today a problem has developed. At one point I noticed the green Microsoft AntiSpyware Security Agent dialog pop up briefly from my system tray to say that it was permitting something to happen or run (it did not give me enough time to read what it allowing to happen). Immediately afterwards a Setup dialog appeared to say that Installshield Wizard was loading. Then the Setup process for MKW Audio Compression Toolkit began. I cancelled the installation and deleted the mkwact097b1.exe file, but since then I have restarted my PC several times and as soon as it has booted up the Installshield Wizard loads and goes into the Setup process. I have run scans of my system with MS AntiSpyware and Norton AntiVirus but they came up clean.

Sometimes it's hard to get all of an application out. The best way to stop the installer from running at boot up is to remove it's registry entry if you're comfortable doing that. Always backup your registry first!
Do a Start/Run/regedit, then navigate to HKey_LocalMachine\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current version\Run
You should see the software in question on the right. Remove it by right clicking and deleting the entry.
Check also at HKey_LocalMachine\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current version\RunOnce

This won't get all of the app out of your PC, but it will stop it from trying to install.
