Hey there guys and gals,

Has anyone tried running an Windows NT4 Terminal Server Edition based Metaframe XP presentation server in a farm which consists of Windows 2003 based Metaframe XP servers?

The reason I ask is that we're looking for a nice way of getting rid of all the Windows NT4 Workations dotted about the place that are necessary for various users to run legacy applications. If we could do the above and give the users access to their legacy apps on an NT4 Citrix server, that would be groovy.

I may end up just having to try it in the lab but I wondered if anyone else had ever seen this working.

Regards - and happy new year!

Don't let me stop you testing this in the lab first, but yes, I have tried this and it works;

MetaFrame XP servers will happily co-exist with other MetaFrame XP servers, at any FR level, but RM will flag servers running different FR levels, especially if one of them becomes an FMS.

I believe that only up to FR1 works on NT4 - and only FR3 and above works on W2k3.

You could create 2 separate farms, of course.

Isn't it possible to get the legacy apps running on W2k3? (just curious!)

I hope this helps

Thanks for that information Mr Engineer!

I'm not sure about the legacy apps on W2K3 - I guess we could try that in the lab too. I was just advised by other technical guys here that they didn't work on Windows XP - not sure why - it could have been that it didn't work when they installed it and so they just left an NT 4 workstation behind because that was quick and easy.

Testing will tell. :)

Thanks again.
