XP Pro will not find the card reader in my my mitsumi FA402-A internal combo FDD/card reader. I should say it does so erratically ... rarely the reader will show up on My Computer as two additional drives, but usually XP Pro just ignores the reader (or perhaps it is the unidentified usb device, i'm not sure). I've deleted the unidentified device but New Hardware replaces it as such and does not find the card reader. I've deleted the USB root hubs but XP Pro finds them and my card reader is not among them. The cables are all tight. Any ideas, tricks or patches that you know of?

if so, a million thanks. I've got a lot of pix on a San Disk card and no easy way to read/see them ...

The voices in your head aren't real, but they have some really good ideas!

Try this quick fix first before you attempt a repair:

Are there any updated drivers from the manufacturer which might solve the problem?

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

If they don't work you could try repairing windows by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.

Unfortunately the "quick fix" link didn't accomplish anything, and the sfc didn't seem to find anything. I'm hesitant to just reinstall windows - this has been an off-and-on problem, and i would think that if it were the kind of problem to be responsive to a re-install it would not work ALL the time, not just most of the time. I'll hold that idea in the back of my mind for later and hope someone else has another suggestion.
thanks for your suggestions and time.

You didnt say what kind of computer, motherboard, etc. I have seen usb problems associated with via chipsets. Have you looked for a bios update on the manufactuers website?

Here is what I would try:

Try the device on another system or two if available. Preferably one with xp pro and one with another OS. If both of the other systems find and attemppt to install the device succesfully then it confirms that it is your system.

if possible try another usb cable (if it is detachable from the device, some are some are not)

Try another USB device in the same USB port to verify that the port is working proberly.

Boot the system first WITHOUT the device attached and check the device manager for the unknown device. Then again with the device attached and check again. If the device is their the second time but not the first chances are that the unknown device is the device your are having problems with.

Run windows update.

In the device manager bring up the properties window for the device and click on the driver tab, click on update driver and allow it to connect over the internet to check for a driver.

Do a google search for the manufacture of the device and a second for the model number. I have a USB floppy drive that I found the driver for by doing a google search for.

thanks for the sugegstions, people.
bios is up to date - MSI has an update assistant that checks it weekly.
mobo is K8N Neo 2 Platinum.
unfortunately i don't have another system to load the device into, usakjw, that would have been handy. Also there are no options for an alternative USB cable.Booting without the device plugged in, and then repeariting it with the device plugged in, does not help or change anything - even without the device, there is an 'unidentified device' and the same # of USB ports. I have run Windows update and am up-to-date - there are no new drivers or other options that are uninstalled.
I thought the google search was a promising idea, but it came up with nothing. I have emailed the manufacturer Mitsumi and have heard nothing back.
I wish i knew why it had identified the card reader occasionally before but usually does not 'see' it.

should i just dump/delete all the USB ports and let windows find everything/ all of them again, or do i risk losing function if i try that ... or is that pointless ...

thanks, Mikl
