When you goto software downloads say for MCD 4.0 , there are number of releases starting with 10.x.x.x
How do you distinguish which one is the Software operating system or the SW Installer Tool just by looking at the 10.x.x.x number .
For example how would you know which of these two, 10.0.4.3 and 10.0.4.14, is the SW Installer tool in the absence of the SI prefixing the number. Do you use the same SW Installer tool release for all versions of MCD 4.0. Please clarify because

Use the latest software tool; they are backwards compatable right back to 4.0 I believe.

Anyone know if I am wrong?

I haven't tested 4.0 from a 7.2 installer tool but my expectation is that it would work.

yep it works, I use it all the time.

Really? You have that many systems running 4.0 that haven't been upgraded and so many in fact that you're only getting around to 7.2 now?

We do

we have taken over support for a number of sites that were installed and left , some are still running 8 and 9
our support includes upgrades so its quite normal for us to have to do such a large jump ( or even a couple of jumps)

If I never did anything I'd never done before , I'd never do anything.....

Yes I have customers with clusters too large to do the GDM migration on, so they can't upgrade past MCD 4.0SP4, I use the same version of SI to re-load those systems when I lose a controller or hard drive as I do on brand new installs on the latest release.

I guess I'm lucky to either have so few comparatively speaking or more engaged customers willing to upgrade.

I rarely let a customer slide more than 2 revisions back

Thanks a lot comrades but my question also asked about the distinction in the versions numbering , since both the Op Software and the Installer tool both carry, for example in the MCD 4.0, a prefix 10.x.x.x. Is there a digit among the x.x.x. that identifies if it is an Installer or the operating software

No, there's no way to tell by just looking at the release number if you're talking about the SI Tool or the 3300/MCD/MiVB software. The first 2 segments of the release number are the same, but the rest will be different since they're different software packages. For example, for MiVB 7.2, the SI tool is 13.2.0.3, while the MiVB software is 13.2.1.27.

Geez you'd think I could get that right. The current SI Tool is 13.2.1.2, sorry.

Thanks once again. This reason I brought this up is that on some occasions is copy and past the software directly on the ftproot and had one couple of occasions inadvertently pasted the wrong software. What would you advise in this case and the best practice weather using the installer tool or terminal emulator like Procomm

I use Filezilla Server to run FTP off my laptop

Everytime a new load becomes avaailable I install it to the default folder on my laptop

I configure the folder to be available via Filezilla

When I upgrade, I set the active folder in Filezilla and proceed from there.

Right now, I have 20 some loads available to me.

I also use FileZilla server, but use a different username for each release, with the home folder for that user account being the folder that the software files for that release are stored in. So if I'm loading MCD 4, I use username "mcd4", for MiVB 7.2, I use "mivb7dot2", and so on.

Great way to keep thing straight

yeah I tried Lundah's method and I was always having issues with having to put a different login everytime

My way has it all under 1 account using the default user and passcode and my folders are all named via alias's with the load number i.e 7.2.1.13

I simply open my shared folder page, select the appropriate load, and set it as my home folder.
