This is a well documented error, for the most part. I have run into a problem by which I cannot determin what caused this error to occour. Here is the scenario:
P4 3.0 Ghz..
win xp pro
installed apps
Simply accounting (latest version)
Abit SG-72 main board
512mb ram.
80 GB IDE ATA 100 Seagate

XP installed no problem the first time. Tried to install Microsoft Works 4.0. This corrupted the boot.ini file and I had to rebuild it. That's fine.

The second time I see the same computer months later it has the same error. Except this time no new software has been installed and a repair install fixes the problem. However I cannot find any reason for this to have happened. No new software has been installed, the user has AVG free edition updated to current and windows updated to latest. Drive didn't need defragmenting and there are no .000 folders. The partition is solid and no errors on the drive.

In conclusion I'm hoping someone here can tell me what kind of Ghost I've got in the system.

I don't use Works so forgive me if this is stupid, but are there also constant updates for works? If so, might not the update installer cause the same corruption that the original installer did?

Just a thought.

It was a very old version win95 era.. Auto updates were just a figment in the mind of some prepubescant programmer then.
