I have a new laptop that came with Windows XP Pro installed. I wanted it to have Windows 2000 Pro instead, so I rebuilt it (the laptop) from my company's standard CD Win2K OS Build. Now I get the dreaded error message "Missing Operating System" and I can't seem to get past it. Can someone help me understand what's going on and how I can solve it. This has not happened before.

As I asked in NT forum:-

What does 'I rebuilt it (the laptop) from my company's standard CD Win2K OS Build.' involve? I presume its not using a 2k install CD - so is it some kind of image (like Ghost)? And was it designed to work on the type of laptop you've used it on? (images like this tend to be hardware specific).

You might get it up and running with a repair reinstall - if you have a 2k install CD available -
PS. Why replace XP with 2k - they're very similar (you can make XP look like 2k if you don't like its GUI), and XP has a few extras (and will be supported longer).

Not only that, but I need to ask, after you loaded 2000, did it boot okay at least one time? Or did you pop in a cd, start the cd, and then bad stuff happened?

Matt J.

Please always take the time to backup any and all data before performing any actions suggested for ANY problem, regardless of how minor a change it might seem. Also test the backup to make sure it is intact.

Good morning

dmacklam22 - No it does not say NTLDR is missing.

wolluf - I used a scripted version of the 2K install CD, which is a standard we use for a client. I have to admit that I made a mistake by not checking for hardware specificity (assumed it would work now since it has worked before with other laptops).

mattjurado - No it did not boot at all. And Yes, I just popped in a CD and bad stuff happened.

Well, what d'you know!!! After several frustrating attempts, for some reason I don't know, the installation of Win2K Pro is complete and the "Missing OS" error did not appear this time. Everything works perfectly.

Did it have to do partitioning (or stuff like that)? I wonder, but I'm really thankful to you guys for your responses.
Cheers

copy NTLDR
and NTDetect from windows 2000 cd and place it on C:\ drive
