I have an XP machine that is currently set to enable offline files. The only problem is his Offline files tab under folder propertiues is missing, and the settings offline files synchronization window is greyed out. Is there any other way to disable the offline files option? I am at a loss, apparently there is an issue with Windows if this Offline files tab is missing. Any help would be appreciated

We are connected to a Windows 2003 domain, we are not using local user logins. The welcome screen and fast user switching are not active.

Are you using Roaming profiles?

We were, but I have since disabled it on the server. However some settings have remained(i.e. offline file option).

And the GPOs set under:
User Configuration
Administrative Templates
Network
Offline Files

Permit without restriction the use of offline files?

Last question: did you change the server name, or move to a new server?

You gave me an idea. I created a GPO that disables all offline file options in the system. I'll let you know if that did it.

Well that didn't do it. The GP will not apply to his machine.

Going back to your question about changing servers. This machine is fairly old and has been joined/disjoined to multiple domains as well as a Novell server. The user and I have come to the conclusion that we should just rebuild/replace this machine.

Thanks for your help!

. Why not?

. You might benefit by using the Win2k3 or earlier reskit utility CCSCMD.EXE if a server change or rename is a possible issue, or other issues:
. Finally, if this is to benefit a small number of your users, you might consider alternatives:

- one of the best freewares on the net
- excellent freeware
- some still like the Briefcase notion

The problem is only with this single machine, no one else has the problem.
The primary server it is trying to synch offline files with is our Novell server, which we recently took down. All attempts to correct this problem have failed. This is but one of many problems this machine is having. Besides, gives us a good excuse to upgrade him to a new machine.

Thanks anyway for your help. I appreciate it.

For the benefit of others who disccover this thread, when a server is removed or renamed, you need to clear the entries for offline files in the workstation so that it can resynchronize on the new server.

You use the utility CCSCMD.EXE, a resource kit tool:

CCSCMD /MOVESHARE:\\Server1\Share \\Server2\Share - Use this switch to move files and directories from one share to another share in the cache. This option is useful if the target of offline files has moved and the local cache has to now point to a new location. For example, use the following command:
CSCCMD /MOVESHARE: \\MyServer\MyShare \\MyServer1\MyShare1

Note MyServer1 is the new server name and MyShare1 is the name of the new shared resource.
