Missing Number

Can you tell me how I can identify missing numbers each contact has a unique number starting from 1001, but I need to identify missing ones in order, for example 1001,1002,1003,100. 1004 is missing.

please help

ADO CONNECTION IN vb 6 TO DBASE III IS POSSIBLE.VIEWING OR BROWSING IS ALSO OK.BUT SAVE,DELETE,APPEND ETC. ARE NOT HAPPENING.MICROSOFT GET ENGINE IS NOT RECOGNIZING.
CAN ANYBODY HELP ME THERE?
