When I try to boot Windows NT on a system with IBM OS/2 Version 2.x, the following error message appears:

Windows NT could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: <winnt root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe

I have found out that the resolution for this problem is to edit the boot.ini file, and change the partition information.

But for doing that, I have to go to the DOS prompt.

Can anybody please advise me how to boot into DOS.

I am a novice in NT server field.

Thanks for your generous help

Changing boot.ini *may* fix your problem.

If the partition is FAT, you can boot from a DOS floppy (you can download the files from and then change boot.ini.

If the partition is NTFS, you'll need a tool such as ERD Pro or NTFSDOS to let you edit it. Alternately, you can slave the hard drive in another PC or install a parallel copy of NT.

Dear John,

Can u please tell me what do u mean by slave hard drive??

Do u mean like take out the hard drive and connect to another computer as an additional hard drive?

Thanks

hi imms50

slaving a drive means what you said in your post. If the disk has ntfs, connect it to another system with ntfs and set the drive as a slave. that way you can view and edit the boot.ini file of your problem disk in another computer
