I discovered that Notepad was missing (Win 98) when I tried to look at the source for a web page and got an error message that it couldn't find Notepad. This brings to mind a couple of questions:

1. Realizing that this isn't the Netscape forum, how can I associate the action of viewing a web page's source with any program (Word, Wordpad, etc.)?

2. Which CD do I need in order to reinstall Notepad?

Thanks, in advance, for your help!

Rosebud,

Can't help with Netscape, quit using it altogether.

First, do a find for notepad.exe

It's probably located in the cab files on your harddrive.

Go to c:\windows\options\cabs, right-click on the cabs directory and choose Find. Type in notepad.exe in the CONTAINING TEXT box.

Extract it to the c:\windows directory.

In Netscape 6 you go to Edit > Preferences > Navigator > Helper Applications, highlight text/html and click edit. It's pretty obvious from there.

Couldn't tell you about previous versions, but the above may help.

Thanks, Reghakr, for your reply. There are two items in the CAB folder: WIN98_42.CAB (a 1,676 WinZip file) and SUBASE.INF (a 59K Setup Information file). Then I did a find on the C drive for a file named notepad.exe and came up with nothing. I'm beginning to think I don't have Notepad ... what do you think?

Paulwood - thanks for answering my question. Unfortunately I asked the wrong question. I was at work when I asked and I use Netscape there. My problem is at home where I use IE 5.5. THAT's where I'd like to know how to associate the action of viewing a web page's source with any program (Word, Wordpad, etc.) because it looks as if I don't have Notepad. Do you know IE as well as Netscape?

TIA, Rosebud

You have to use Notepad to view the source. You can run SFC (start--run--type SFC and press enter) and extract notepad.exe from C:\Windows\Options\Cabs. Or post an email addy and one of us could send it to you.

A possibility for Notepads disappearance is if you have the Qaz virus. Run a scan and see but I don't think you're infected.

By the way, Notepad.exe would go into the Windows folder.

BINGO - thanks, I now have Notepad back and don't have to worry about associating anything else! Gotta love this group!

To add your preference to the View>Source option in Internet Explorer, go to Start>Run, type regedit. Navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer
Right-click on the Internet Expolorer key, choose new>Key, name it View Source Editor, right-click on View Source Editor key, choose new>Key name it Editor Name, right-click on (Default) in the right pane and type the name of your editor (for example I use Textpad.)

As long as the application has an entry under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths, you need only provide the name.

If it doesn't have any entry you'll need to enter the full pathname (for example,) "C:\Program Files\TextPad 4\TextPad.exe"

In your case, if you still want Notepad as your editor just type Notepad when you right-click on the (Default) untry under the Editor Name key
