I really need help. My server won't boot and it keeps saying it's missing the MSASN1.dll file.

Microsoft is having trouble helping me too. I have about 70 people breathing down my neck. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

there are several options that might help you out.

1. go to and get a nt dos boot disk this will allow you to write to an NTFS partion then copy the file that you need to the appropriate location. If you have another server you can get the file from it and find out where it needs to be on the other server.
2. boot to windows server CD and do a repair

From what i have read the file has something to do with IE
and it prohibits Schannel.dll from loading. This is information though was not directly pertaining to W2K server but just maybe it will help you out.

First, have you tried to reboot with a restore to "Last Known Good Configuration"? That at least should get the Server up so you can find your missing DLL file. When booting, I believe you need to chose "R" for the Recovery Console in order to use the "Last Known Good Config" option.

Mind you, this option ONLY works if you haven't been able to sucessfully boot the server since this problem started. Also, what drivers and apps did you install right around the time this problem happen? Or worse, what did you uninstall right before this problem? Might have been an accidently deleted shared file.

Lastly, you said Microsoft is having trouble helping. Have you managed to locate the DLL on their website or on another Win 2000 Server you have around? If you can get the server to boot with last known config, explore the directory and see if you can find the file with the search tools. It might be corrupted rather then missing. If so, you should just be able to copy it over with a new version. Or replace a missing one with it. If file is good to go, maybe it just needs an additional copy in the system or boot partition somewhere.

Just throwing out ideas, here. Hope they help.

If last known good configuration doesn't work, try safe mode. Have you got an Emergency Repair Disk. I create them monthly to keep the servers up to date. Glen A. Johnson
