We have started a migration to 2003 from NT 4.0.
The current domain name mydomain.org is used internally and externally for email and internet access to our website.
During the upgrade of the PDC we are being asked by the AD installation wizard for a FQDN. We give it mydomain.org and it tells us we can't use it because it's already in use.
1. Why can't we use the current domain name for AD? Shouldn't it default to the current domain name?
2. Can the AD domain name be different than the domain name, such as internal.mydomain.org?
3. Does the AD name affect our access to the internet, email?
Really need help on this.

I'm not sure why it won't let you use the mydomain.org for the AD domain.

Yes the AD domain name can be different. In fact the current thought process from microsoft would be to be mydomain.local, mydomain.prv, etc. Basically use a version that can't be resolved on the internet. This would be a nother layer of security.

The AD domain being different than the internet domain will not effect your internet access, email, etc.
