I've done a fair bit of development using Access but a client is asking for SQL Server. It's a pretty simple project from a database point of view. I've two questions.

1 If I develop locally using MSDE, can the database be deployed and used by SQL server. In other words, can I avoid buying SQL Server for development.

2 Any advice you may have would be welcome.

The answer is yes, you can use MSDE as a development tool, which is FULLY upgradeable to SQL Server. In fact I use MSDE quite often. It has support for triggers, stored procedures, views, transactional processing. It's a great choice for a multi-user environment of 20 or less. The best part of it -- it's FREE. And it's freely distributable with your application. The other bonus is that you can use the upgrade wizard in Access to port tables, forms, reports etc to MSDE in the form of an Access Project. Or you can just port the tables, views, etc to MSDE and build your own client -- that is what I do.

Make sure you download MSDE 2000 - it's much better than MSDE 1.0.
