I need to mirgate from Windows 2000 AD to Windows 2003 AD.

I have three main concerns: moving DNS from the Windows 2000 DC to a Windows 2003 DC, pre-Windows 2000 desktops being able to log on and forestprep/domain for Windows 2003 (moving dhcp and wins seems simple enough).

#1 Moving DNS

How exactly do you move a active directory integrated DNS server from a Windows 2000 Server to a Windows 2003 Server? Should I do this before or after I run dcpromo on the Windows 2003 Server?

#2 pre-Windows 2000 desktops

I've read somewhere that you need to make a security policy change inorder for pre-Windows 2000 desktops to logon once you install a Windows 2003 DC. Any other issues?

#3 forestprep/domainprep

I ran forestprep and domainprep from the Windows 2003 Server cd before I installed Exchange 2003 awhile back. The servers I have now mainly run Windows 2003 R2. Do I need to run forestprep and/or domainprep again from the Windows 2003 R2 cd before attempting the dcpromo on the Windows 2003 Server?

For a Windows 2003R2 server to become a DC you need to run adprep from the 2nd 2003R2 cd.

To move DNS simply promote a 2003 box to a DC and then install the DNS service on the new DC, assuming you have AD integrated zones the new DC will pick these up automatically.

Take a look at these;

And this for how to have pre windows 2000 desktops login to a windows 2003 domain;
