NT server running WINS, DNS, DHCP, PROXY, EXCHANGE 5.5.
10 users, all dynamic.
8 servers, static, WINS enabled.

Second Office - no servers, 5 users, all static, WINS enabled.

When I add the new SBS server to the domain and move the exchange mailboxes and users, it is my assumption that I will have to disable WINS on the static servers and PC's, right?
All other settings on these servers will stay the same, correct? Or not correct?

Thanks!

Just to make sure we are on the same page here, you do realize you can not "add" SBS to an existing domain right?

It is possible to add additional servers (even DCs) to an SBS domain, but not the other way around.

I hope you find this post helpful.

Yes. When I say 'add', I mean, add it to the room with the other 8 servers. I realize from our other discussions that my terminology needs help!! :)

When you set up SBS, it will configure WINS automatically for you. If you have other servers running as WINS servers then you wil want to disable that on those servers. You will also need to disable DHCP on any other servers too.

If you have another domain present, you will need to retire it and move its resources into the new SBS domain.

I hope you find this post helpful.

Right. The article I mentioned in the other thread explains how to migrate everything from NT to SBS 2003.

Last night, I tried to install SBS 2003 on the new server according to that article, and one other titled, 'GETTING STARTED: MS SBS 2003 with SP 1'. I did the following:

Disconnected the DSL modem from the internet

Stopped and disabled DHCP on the source (old nt pdc) server

Plugged the destination (new) server into the same switch as the source server (so DHCP would know to install)

Put CD into destination server and start it up, following prompts to install OS.

Everything went fine until the basic setup finished.
I input the product key, files copied for about 20 minutes, then the server restarted.
It got to the 'LOADING WINDOWS SERVER 2003' screen, then the screen went blank and it stopped responding.
I waited, then restarted the server, it stopped in the same spot.

Any ideas?

Can you get to safe mode to check logs?

I hope you find this post helpful.

No. Windows 2003 server has never started. It looks like it will start, but then just stops responding.
I tried to repair, but the OS just re-installed itself, to the same end.
I think I'll try to install a fresh OS including a format of the HD.
