Hello all, I am in desperate need of some advice. I have been tasked to move our main FTP server (IIS 5) to a new server (will be IIS 6 on Win2k3). I am aware of the free utility called IIS export, but unfortunately, this only takes care of half of the issue. The real issue is that the current ftp has approximately two to three hundred accounts on it and I need to get these accounts to the new server. To make things more complicated, these are not active directory servers, just standalone (on the same network though). Can anyone give me any advice on how I might go about tranferring these hundreds of local user accounts to the new server without having to redo each one manually? TIA

Hi!
If your current FTP server is a stand alone machine then all the accounts are in the local SAM database. The physical location of the SAM file is:
C:\winnt\system32\config\
You can transfer the SAM file from one machine to another. I have done this successfully on Windows 2000 machine – transferring the SAM file from one W2k machine to another W2k machine. This transfers all the user accounts and passwords. I am not sure whether it is possible to transfer the SAM file from a W2k machine to a Windows 2003 server. Anyway you don’t have nothing to loose. Worse case scenario you can install the new FTP server with W2k OS, replace the SAM file with the one from the old FTP server and then upgrade to Windows 2003 server.

Wow, if this works I can't explain how much time this is going to save me. Will I need only the SAM file or other ones in that config directory? Also, will it let me copy/move it to the other server in regular modes or will I have to put both servers in safe mode or dos to do it. Thanks again,
