Here is the situation:
We have two domains - DOMAIN_OLD is an NT domain, that still has some essential servers in it (they are all BDCs or the PDC).. DOMAIN_NEW is a Win2000 AD domain. The majority or our servers and all of our workstations have been moved there.
THE QUESTION: One of the BDCs in DOMAIN_OLD is one of our office's FILE SERVER. It is in another building from our main network and connects through a WAN. It is also running DHCP for this second site.
What are the implications of upgrading this server to Win2k? Will it upgrade as a member server, or as a DC of the new domain? Any thoughts about the DHCP?
THANKS so much for any insight.

Dylan619,

It would upgrade to a member server. You would then have to join it to the New 2K domain. If you wanted it to be a domain controller you would have to promote it by running DCPROMO.

I don't think you'll have any problem with the DHCP during the upgrade.

so, when I upgrade it, will it automatically be a member server, or will it try to become a DC?

It will be a normal server, then join it to the domain like the other servers. If you wanted it to be a DC, you'd then run DCPROMO.

I just recently tried to do this in a test environment, and I was not able to upgrade the BDC without first upgrading the PDC to 2000.
