I am in the process of migrating 11 Novell servers ranging
from 4.11 thru 5.1. Can I use the Migration wizard or Server Consolidation Utility to do over the wire migration.
All of the 11 servers have old hardware, they will be replace with HP ML 370 server. Can I use Consolidation Utility and if so who does it works.

Thanks

i would use the migration wizard - just as i'm more at home with it
just make sure you download the latest from web

consolidation is good as well but i only played with it

Migration wizard all the way.. You may have problems with the data transfer, it seems a little buggy. Use Beyond Compare - it's a great utility to make sure you have identical copies.
The newest migration utility is the one to use Like Terry says, but I think that you may have to use V6.5 to migrate the NW4.11 servers. I can't remember for sure. Both can be downloaded from download.novell.com.

Also, don't forget to extend the schema using CD#1 in a regular windows workstation.

I too had a mixed environment....What I mean by mixed is (1)4.11, (3)5.1, and (1) 5.0 servers.

We upgraded one server at a time....Over the course of 8 months.

I ran the migration manager and made sure that all my servers had the proper updated versions on NDS, all the necessary patches...

When I was confident that I was good to go. I made sure that my 4.11 machine was not my master replica and there were no major NDS issues. I then ran my backup to tape as well as another NDS volume on another server. I was lucky because my old hardware was not netware 6.5 compliant so I got a new server. After the backups I removed NDS from my orginal Netware 4.11 server and turned it off.

I installed the new server (Netware 6.5 sp 2) During this process I had a major issue...On my netware 4.11 server I had compression enabled and on the new Netware 6.5 machine initially I did not. I ended up with a ton of corrupted files when I copied them to the netware 6.5 machine from tape. After pulling my hair out I realized what was going on enable compression on my Netware 6.5 volumes and poof recopied my files back over and no problems....

Pointers4.11/5/5.1 conversion to 6.5 that may help:

1. Run the migration manager...Do all the necessary patches..Update NDS to proper lvl

2. Check that files are going from uncompressed vol to uncompressed vol or compressed to compressed

3. Always a good idea to have more than one copy of your data

4. Make sure you have a healthy tree before beginning

5. Make sure if you have apps running on your servers that they will run on netware 6.5

6. Make sure you designate a new certificate server if you are upgrading your master replica.

7. Remove NDS from the OLD server using the proper procedures....

8. Run DSREPAIR repeatedly.....

I hope this helps you out a little bit....All of my servers including GW and BorderManager are all Netware 6.5 and running like champs. Good Luck to you.

Personally, I chose to do it this way because that consolidation thing scared me a lot when I started reading about it.
