I'm trying to setup the distinctive ring option on our MICS 0x32 (DRv7.1) so that an incoming fax on a distinctive ring can be routed directly to that fax machine (via ATA2).

Does anyone know. Is distinctive ringing supported by older LS/DS trunk cards? Or, do I need a newer CLID card?

No matter what distinctive ring pattern I select for a line, the calls always ring through on all ring types. I'm wondering if its my older generation LS/DS card, a prime line setting for the telephone or some other obscure setting this newbie doesn't understand.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

-thanks

Sounds to me like your thinking of "Identical" from your line provider. If this is the case you will need a ring selector upstream from the phone system.

I currently use a line selector, and I could put it upstream to solve the problem.

I just was under the impression that the MICS (v7.1) supported Distinctive Ring for lines (separate from Distinctive Ring for telephone sets).

Unfortunately the document is kind of sketchy on the details. I can seem to set it up, it just doesn't want to work. Thought it might be my trunk cards not being able to support the feature or something.

The thing you have got to remember when dealing with different companies like nortel, AT&T, BellCore, Lucent etc. is that they tend to use the same name for different things, or the same thing but looked at in a different way.

Nortel Distinctive ring is that there are 4 ring patterns available on the norstar system, you can program a line to ring on the phones with a distinctive ring ie. wierd warble, long buzz, etc.

What the Telco means by distinctive ring is that you can have different telephone numbers assigned to a particular trunk and you will get one long ring for the main number, two short rings for the second number, one short and one long for the third ring etc.

I have put a line in a norstar that had distinctive ring (for a fax line) and found out the folloeing
1. you have to have a Telephone Line Sharing Device ( )that will handel the call based on distinctive ring, this device will transfer the call to the fax or voice port of the device.
2. either put this line as line one or remove it from the line pool since when a fax is being received and you try to access the voice port of the TAD you will either get dead air or a busy.
