A school with 7 building will be setting up a fiber backbone to link all voice and data. Will be taking their large MICS and running fiber extenders to each building. They also want a loudspeaker paging system with horns inside and outside. Normally would use something like a Valcom with contact closure and then run the audio to the horns via copper. If they want a global paging system throughout the entire campus using a Nortel PAGE button on the phones what would be the best way to do this?

I would use amplified speakers, the power would be installed close to the speakers making it easier to troubleshoot and less power loss.

you didn't mention that the customer was laying copper in between buildings so with fiber only you need to intrface out of the phone system. easiest way out like that would b use set up a 7208 in each building as the output for PA. I use the VikingElectronics M2W and the headset jack. then paging that comes ofer the zone that the phone is assigned to comes out of the M2w and use that as the raw volume control.

Lets say I run some copper along with the fiber backbone What is longest distance I can push the amplified paging signal to the horns via copper if I use for example a Valcom amplifier?

Hi Jerry,

I like this idea of using the M2W. I noticed 2 different pictures of the M2W....One has an RJ jack on the main box while the other one has terminal screws. Is there a difference?

It would be awesome to not have to cut the leads to the speaker and just use the headset jack and plug it into the Viking device via the RJ-9 female end.

Please elaborate if you have a chance.

In order to use Loudspeaker paging in a remote site as you mentioned, I cut the speaker leads on an older I2001 set and attached them via RCA jack into a TOA amplifier.....not after trying an IP 1210 and M7100 to various results:

M7100 would shut off whenever I attached the leads to an amplifier (any idea why?)
1210 IP set sounded pretty clear, but for some reason Mute key on phone set interfered with operation....when Mute key not pressed, any background noise would "quiet" the output of the page being broadcast....but I was in the same room.
I2001 phone worked great because of no Mute key.

In the future, I'd like to avoid cutting the leads on the phone.

Thanks,

Joe

Want the school have an intercom system? If so you could just tie it to the MICS with a Trunk port and use it.
