I just purchased a new Windows XP computer and was using Word on it yesterday. Now today I can't get Word to work at all. It tries to start but then comes up with the message "Microsoft Word for Windows has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

Please tell Microsoft about this problem.

I am running Office 2000 Premium and have installed all the updates, ran a repair, ran a reinstall but it still won't work.

Any help would be much appreciated

Just my own thoughts, but it is probably a permissions issue. Did you install office while logged in as administrator??

Try making your login a part of the local administrators group on the XP machine. See if that resolves your problem.

I checked and my user is the administrator. However when I transfered files from my Windows 98 machine it brought over the settings for somethings as well. Like now My Documents is under Documents and settings\Hi\My Documents. I am not really familar with XP and I have no idea how things got there other than it transfered from the 98 machine and did this. Any idea how I can fix this? I really think that is why Word won't open because the icon is looking to this directory for the program and it isn't there.
