I have hundreds of users that have created files based on templates on a server that no longer exists. These files take ages to open until they timeout when the original template cant be found. I know I can go into tools/templates and addins and delete the template reference. The problem is that there are thousands of documents that will need to be ammeneded, does anyone know of an automated way to do this so as to cause minimal user disruption.

thanks in advance

check to see if any user had saved the dot file(s) on their PC.

quite often users will do this and not even realize it or some just want the dot file on their PC because they want it!

good luck

Thank you eyec, unfortunately
The problem doesn't appear to be with the dot files but the fact that the original template files are in a now non reacheable place (A switched off novell server)When trying to open a file created using one of the templates it freezes until timeout

Hi nickryman,

The search order for attached templates (by name alone) is:[ol][li]The same folder as the document[/li][li]The User Templates folder (set under Tools > Options > File Locations)[/li][li]The Workgroup Templates folder (also set under Tools > Options > File Locations)[/li][li]The path as held in the document (the one which is causing you trouble)[/li][li](give up and use normal.dot)[/li][/ol]So if you can put the templates you need in any of locations 1, 2 or 3 your problem should quietly go away. The contents of the templates are not important (to Word, they might be to you [smile]), just the name.

Once you can open your documents you can decide what you want to do as a permanent solution - you could automatically change the template in an autoopen macro, for example.

Enjoy,
Tony
