Hi,

We are having a weird problem at a client. They are running Windows 98 and MS Office 2000. The problem is this: When opening Word, the "Save As" window opens and minimises itself then blinks showing that it is the active window (in the background). This causes the user not to be able to use Word, because the Save As box is the active one and sits in the background. The only way to get back to Word's main screen, is to ALT+TAB, then the Save As box comes up, then you click Cancel, and continue working in Word. We've loaded service packs for Office, no luck! Any clue as to what could cause this? Also, this not only happens on one machine, that have a small network of about 4 machines. It happens on at least 3 of them.

Thanx

Hi Casper - sounds like an AutoOpen macro.

Try this: Search for "Normal.dot" and rename it to "Normal.old"

Restart Word.

If the macro is in Normal.dot, this would solve the problem.

Else: Move all dots out of the Word Startup folder (C:\Documents and settings...\Application data\Word
and C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Startup)
to a safe place and restart Word.

Hope that helps,
Andy

Hi Andy,

Thanks for the tip. I will try this and will post whatever the result is. Thanks again.

Hi Andy,

I'm at the client today and did what you suggested. No luck on that. This is what I have found:

1. Open MS Word, go File, Open (or just click the file open icon on the menu), Browse to the file (file on the local workstation or sitting on a network workstation), Open the file. Go Save As, then the Save as window appears normal. No problem with this method.

2. Open Windows Explorer, Go to folder where the file(s) is (local or network makes no difference), Double click the file then MS Word opens. When the file is open, you can then do File, Save As, the the Save as window minimises to the taskbar and flashes (like ii's in the background). Click twice on the taskbar to restore the Save as window. The Save As window appears and you can save. Then click again on the taskbar to Restore MS Word. What is then strange, if you do File, Save as again, then the Save as window appears normal. Close MS Word, and then the problem appears. After you save once, then problem dissapears if you understand what I'm trying to say.

Any other ideas? I doubt whether the MS Office service packs will make a difference but I will load the latest one anyways?
