I recently got a new Dell laptop computer and now my Microsoft Wireless Intellimouse Explorer won't work. When I try to install the Intellipoint software, there is a conflict with the built-in touchpad on the notebook. I have tried uninstalling the software for the touchpad, but then I get an error message during the uninstall, and a conflict when I install the Intellipoint. This is very frustrating because on my old Dell laptop I just plugged the mouse in and it worked fine. I've even disengaged the touchpad in CMOS and it still won't let me install the software. I'm just curios if anyone else has had this problem. Thanks as always for any help anyone can provide!

This is hard to answer generally, as there are two touchpads (Alps and Synaptic), BIOS revision differences (in many disabling the touchpad does not function), and three kinds of mice: serial, PS-2, and USB.

But in general, the following hints may help:

1. use a PS/2 mouse and not USB
2. With the mouse connected, go to Device Manager and uninstall the touchpad drivers.
3. Install the Intellimouse drivers
4. Install the touchpad drivers again.

Before beginning, go to the Dell site (or if Synaptics touchpad the Synaptics site) and get the most recent driver set for the touchpad. Go to the Microsoft site and get if warranted the newest intellimouse driver set.

Use these newer driver sets in the steps above.
