We run a single Windows server 2000 domain controller that also provides file and print serving, user authentication etc. to 30 plus clients

I'm looking to implement a second server running win 2003 to function purely as an SMS 2003 box, aswell as the SMS CALs do i need the approriate number of Windows server CALs for SMS clients that accesses it ? or can i simply purchase the server license only, and how does this scenario apply to other MS servers running ontop of 2003 i.e SQL, exchange, ISA.

Linnk to SMS licensing:

Basically, you will need to buy SMS and SQL plus the client licenses. Microsoft gives you a break on the SQL licensing when you buy SMS becuase SMS will not run without SQL.

Your probably looking at $5k to $6.5k in licensing...

We're actually looking to purchase the SMS 2003 version with integrated SQL2000 - saving us money by not having to buy SQL client licenses and a dedicated SQL server.

I'm clear on the SMS CALs but am not sure on the Windows Server 2003 CAL requirements for our SMS server

Any thoughts ?
