I am considering purchasing a copy of Office 2000 Developers Edition. I want to be able to run an Access Database on a PC that does not have Access installed. Has anyone used the developers edition before? How well did it work? What are the pros and cons? Would you recommend using it?

Thanks,

Stacy

I have had Developers Edition for Access 97 and XP. It does allow you to install Runtime versions relatively easily on users PC's however there is a cost issue to consider.

If you are installing many of them it will be worth it, however for only one PC I would recommend either buying Office Pro or stand-alone Access for them.

The other factor is that you will not be able to make any changes to the database on a system with Runtime only therefore you need a front-end and back-end setup. This also means any changes will have to be performed on a full version Access PC then copied onto the users PC. This has potential (but solveable) ramifications with data paths also.

Thanks for the tip. When you say front-end and back-end setup what do you mean? I think I know what you are saying but I want to be sure.

Thanks.

You need the programs in a different Access database than the data. Link the tables to the program database. This will allow you to make program changes without affecting the users latest data.
