2/3 Times I Open Internet Explorer An Error Comes up That Says:

Microsoft Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

If you were in the middle of something, the information you were working on might be lost.

Then there is a check box and next to it says: Restart Microsoft Internet Explorer

Please tell Microsoft about this problem.
We have created an error report that you can send to help us improve Microsoft Internet Explorer. We will treat this report as confidential and anonymous.

To see what data this error report contains, click here.

Then you can either click:

Send Error Report Don't Send

I've Clicked both before.

And Then Sometimes an Illegal Operation comes up.

Last Night and This Morning it was EVERY time I opened Internet Explorer.. Now The odd time I can get it to open without the error coming up.
I tryed putting my Windows 98 disc in and running the setup again, but it didn't work.
Any Suggestions would be great,
Thanks,
Alicia.

Did you try repairing IE with its repair tool in System Information/Tools, or reinstalling IE?

What is the exact text of the Illegal Operation error message, incl. 'Details'?

Usually occurs in the wininet.dll module though not always.....Details of error are important .(there's a button to "view report" or somesuch, it's weird to follow if i remember)
And running the IE repair is a good sugg. like ski said
Start>Run MSinfo32
Tools menu>IE Repair tool....choose "Repair" not Restore
Run it 4 times before allowing it to Restart....

Hey, Thanks for the suggestions
I tryed the IE repair but it didnt work. This is what comes up in details when the error comes up:

Error signature:
AppName: iexplore.exe AppVer: 6.0.2800.1106 Mod Name: kernel32.dll
ModVer: 4.10.0.2222 Offset:0000a388

This error report includes: information regarding the condition of Microsoft
Internet Explorer when the problem occurred; the operating system version and
computer hardware in use; your Digital Product ID, which could be used to
identify your license; and the Internet Protocol (IP) address of your computer.
We do not intentionall collect files, name, address, email address or any other

And under Details when the Illegal operation comes up, it says:

IEXPLORE caused an invalid page fault in
module KERNEL32.DLL at 0167:bff7a388.

If some of ski's suggestion didn't quite do it.....let me ask; Do you have GATOR on the machine? or GAIN?...get rid of it, that's Spyware (an alternative is RoboForm)...
Use Control Panel Add/Remove Programs, then d/l and run Spybot S&D, CWS, and AdAware
d/l links at bottom of link page

Also although alot of these links refer to MSHTML and Outlok Express errors, these errors can basically intermingle as it all depends what you were doing at the time it occured (ie. Which programs were loaded into memory and accessed at that time).

CWS is a trojan that hijacks Internet Explorer start and search settings to one of several different web sites. Most of these web sites appear to have an affiliate relationship with coolwebsearch.com. This will cause the iexplorer errors described at address 0167:bff7a388.

An executable file named bootconf.exe is copied to the \windows\system32\ folder and set to load at startup. Even if you fix the hijack, this file will reinstall it the next time it is loaded.

To get rid of the trojan, download and run the following program. Make sure all other windows are closed before running. This will fix your problem without even needing to reboot.

Hope this helps,
